Riot Games recently revealed plans for a complete overhaul of the support role in the major 2027 update codenamed “League Next” (League of Legends 2). This news has brought hope to players who have been waiting for a new support champion for four years.

Since the release of Milio in March 2023, Riot has released nine new champions (including the confirmed but unreleased Locke), but none of them are supports. Furthermore, Riot has stated that it will only release one new champion this year, meaning that the support role will face a four-year hiatus of new champions by 2027, and possibly even longer.
In response to the dissatisfaction of support players, Riot’s Senior Vice President Andrei “Meddler” van Roon responded on Reddit: “I can’t reveal specifics right now. I play support the most myself, and I also feel the frustration of the lack of new champions.”
Meddler revealed that the major overhaul of the support role will be implemented in the 2027 “League Next” update. He stated, “In ‘League Next,’ there are some systemic changes I’m really looking forward to from a support’s perspective, but of course, that will take some time.”

“League Next” is a major overhaul of League of Legends by Riot, expected to release in 2027. It will address the traditional separation between the game client and the game itself, while updating the Hextech engine and the Summoner’s Rift map. Furthermore, the rune system, other game modes and maps, game aesthetics, and the new player experience will also be improved.

Currently, Riot is remaining silent on specific details of “League Next,” with more information expected to be revealed between MSI and Worlds in 2026.
Meddler also acknowledged the “frustration of a lack of new champions” in his response, but emphasized that improvements to the support role will focus more on mechanics. For a MOBA game, such a long wait inevitably makes support players feel marginalized.

The League of Legends support role will undergo a systemic rework in “League Next” (League of Legends 2) in 2027. Do you think support players should continue to wait, or should Riot release a new support as a temporary measure?
