Spanish fifth-tier club Cornilla announced on Thursday that Lionel Messi has acquired the Catalan-based team, becoming its owner. In a statement, Cornilla said, “This move deepens Lionel Messi’s connection with Barcelona and demonstrates his commitment to developing Catalan sports and local talent.” Located on the outskirts of Barcelona, Cornilla has been relegated for two consecutive seasons. Despite being a lower-tier team, it has produced many notable players, including Arsenal goalkeeper Raheem Laye and Messi’s former Barcelona teammate, Eiba.
Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, currently plays for Inter Miami and will help Argentina defend their World Cup title this summer.
A product of Barcelona’s youth academy, Messi is Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer with 672 goals. It is widely believed that the 38-year-old’s acquisition is a significant step towards a future return to Barcelona.
