On April 17th, tech media outlet Android Authority published a blog post revealing the Pixel Glow feature in the code of the Android 17 Beta 4 update, suggesting that the Pixel 11 series phones will feature hardware RGB lighting.
The report points out that in the Android 17 Beta 2 update, Google introduced character descriptions related to “Light animations,” codenamed “Orbit”; in the Android 17 Beta 4 update, this project has been renamed “Pixel Glow,” making its functionality clearer. Screenshots from appreviewpros.com are attached below.

According to the code description, when the phone is placed face down, the system uses “subtle lighting and color” to alert the user to notifications, incoming calls, or Gemini interactions. For example, if a user’s favorite contact (such as a partner, close friend, or family member) calls, the feature will display a preset light to alert the user.
In Android 14, Google introduced Flash Notifications, which uses screen light or the camera’s LED flash to alert the user to incoming calls. Pixel Glow is similar in purpose, but the two cannot be enabled simultaneously.
The difference is that Flash Notifications relies on existing hardware (screen and flash), while the Pixel Glow code explicitly requires that “the device must have hardware lighting.”
Based on this requirement, the media speculates that the Pixel 11 series may feature a separate RGB LED light strip, although currently leaked Pixel 11 renders do not show any obvious lighting components.
The code also repeatedly mentions Gemini, echoing Google’s recent emphasis on rainbow lighting effects. The media believes that Pixel Glow may become the visual identifier for Gemini interactions, presenting specific lighting effects when the voice assistant is activated, enhancing brand recognition of AI features.
