Apple’s next-generation small-sized tablet is gradually emerging. According to multiple leaks compiled by MacRumors on April 15th, the new iPad mini (tentatively called the 8th generation) is expected to be released in the second half of 2026, with a fairly clear overall upgrade direction.

In terms of performance, this device, internally codenamed J510/J511, is expected to be equipped with the A19 Pro chip from the same series as the iPhone Air. However, this chip may not be the full-fledged version—considering the product line distinction, the higher-end Pro models will be equipped with the full specifications (6-core CPU + 6-core GPU), while the version used in the iPad mini 8 will likely have reduced graphics performance to control power consumption and cost.
The screen is the biggest highlight of this update. Apple plans to say goodbye to the long-used LCD panel and introduce OLED technology to the iPad mini for the first time. Compared to traditional LCDs, OLED displays purer blacks, offers superior contrast and color performance, resulting in a significantly improved overall viewing experience.

In terms of size, the new model may increase slightly from the current 8.3 inches to approximately 8.7 inches. However, it’s important to note that it won’t use the dual-layer LTPO OLED found in the iPad Pro, but rather a single-layer LTPS solution, meaning there will be some compromise in peak brightness and energy efficiency.
Regarding the high refresh rate, which is of great interest to users, there is still uncertainty. While Apple has gradually rolled out 120Hz across some product lines, there’s no definitive information on whether the iPad mini will address this shortcoming. If it does support a high refresh rate, the experience in gaming and handwriting scenarios will be significantly enhanced.
There are also new attempts in structural design. According to Mark Gurman, Apple is exploring a solution that uses vibrations to generate sound, thus eliminating the need for traditional speaker grilles. This design not only helps improve the overall unibody design but also effectively reduces the risk of water and dust ingress, potentially giving the iPad mini the first official protection rating.

Regarding release date and price, this OLED version of the iPad mini is expected to debut in the second half of 2026. Considering the upgrades in screen and structure, its starting price may increase from the current $499 to approximately $599, and its overall positioning will also be slightly elevated.
