Liverpool striker Ekitike, suspected of ruptured Achilles tendon, was stretchered off and will likely miss this summer’s World Cup.
Liverpool manager Slot said after striker Ekitike was stretchered off in the Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain that his injury “looks very bad.”
Ekitike was injured in the 28th minute of Liverpool’s Champions League second leg tie against PSG on Wednesday morning (April 15th) in Singapore time. He collapsed in pain, clutching his lower right calf, suspected of ruptured Achilles tendon. Liverpool lost 0-2 to PSG in that match, ultimately exiting the tournament with a 0-4 aggregate score.
When asked about Ekittik’s injury, Sloot said, “It looks very bad, but it’s hard for me to judge exactly how serious it is right now.
“We’ll do further tests tomorrow. We’ll see how it goes, but it doesn’t look good at the moment.”
Sloot paired Ekittik with Isak in attack for this match, the latter making his first start since fracturing his leg in December. However, the pair were forced to separate after less than half an hour together.
Injuries have been a major reason for Liverpool’s poor performance this season. They are currently fifth in the Premier League and will end the season without a trophy.
Ekittik may miss representing France at the World Cup.
Sloot added, “We’ve had many player injuries this season, but it’s been particularly difficult for him (Ekittik). Nobody wants to be injured, especially at this stage of the season.” “
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will begin in mid-June this year, and Ekittik is highly likely to miss the tournament for the French national team due to injury.
Ekittik transferred from Bundesliga side Frankfurt to Liverpool last July, scoring 17 goals for his new club across all competitions and making eight appearances for the national team, contributing two goals.”
