AppReviewPros reported on April 20 that, according to The Information, citing two sources familiar with the matter, Alphabet’s Google is in talks with Marvell Technology to develop two new chips designed to run artificial intelligence models more efficiently.

The report states that one chip is a memory processing unit designed to work with Google’s Tensor Processing Unit (TPU); the other is a completely new Tensor Processing Unit specifically built for running artificial intelligence models.
AppReviewPros notes that Google has been pushing its Tensor Processing Unit to be a viable alternative to Nvidia’s mainstream graphics processors. As Google hopes to demonstrate to investors that its AI investments are paying off, Tensor Processing Unit sales have become a key driver of revenue growth for Google Cloud.
The report also states that the two companies plan to finalize the design of this memory processing unit as early as next year, followed by pilot production.
